Es ist die Kategorie, die den Fachjournalisten wohl am meisten Spaß macht: Die Klasse „Performance“, in der bei den GCOTY Awards alle neuen Modelle gegeneinander antreten, die als Roadster, Sportwagen oder als High-Performance-Derivate regulärer Baureihen definiert sind. Zu letzteren Gruppe gehört die Version Sapphire, mit der Lucid die noch relativ neue Baureihe Air mit einem Spitzenmodell ergänzt
Mit einer Leistung von 920 kW/1250 PS ist der Lucid Air Sapphire eine Limousine der Superlative. Drei Elektromotoren, die ihre Kraft auf beide Achsen übertragen, sorgen nicht nur für eine Beschleunigung von 0 auf 100 km/h in glatten 2 Sekunden, sondern auch für eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 330 km/h. Dieser Wert ist übrigens abgeregelt; offen würde der Sapphire, so verraten Insider, eine Vmax von rund 380 km/h erreichen.
Den Sapphire gibt es nur in einer einzigen Farbe, nämlich in einem dunklen Blauton namens sapphire blue. Das Interieur ist mit dunklem Leder und Alcantara ausgekleidet. Das bei anderen Air-Varianten verfügbare Glasdach gibt es hier nicht: Steifigkeit und Leichtbau genießen bei diesem Derivat oberste Priorität.
Im Gegensatz zu anderen leistungsstarken Elektroautos ist der Air darauf ausgelegt, die enorme Leistung sicher auf die Straße zu bringen. Das bereits bei den anderen Versionen eindrucksvolle Fahrwerk wurde nochmals überarbeitet, die Bremsanlage größer dimensioniert. Bei Testfahrten auf dem GTEST-Event in diesem Sommer konnte sich die Fachpresse davon überzeugen, dass der Air Sapphire nicht nur rennstrecken-, sondern auch autobahntauglich ist.
Tatsächlich ist das Fahrerlebnis rundum überzeugend, die Beschleunigung geradezu surreal. Das alles hat seinen Preis: Exakt 250.000 Euro müssen für das German Performance Car Of The Year den Besitzer wechseln. Wer nicht so viel Leistung braucht, der kann einen Lucid Air auch schon ab 85.900 Euro bekommen. Selbst in der günstigsten Variante stecken noch stolze 325 kW/442 PS unter der wohlgeformten Haut.
